Dozens of endangered Hawksbill sea turtles successfully hatched on Thai island
Dozens of endangered Hawksbill sea turtle eggs have successfully hatched on an island in Thailand.
An incredible 113 hatchlings emerged from their shells at Koh Talu island in Prachuap Khiri Khan island on September 11, conservationists said.
The clutch is the 13th laid by mother turtle Mae Pornnapa and is the 12th set of eggs to be successfully hatched.
Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation said staff of the Ao Siam National Park and Siam Marine Rehabilitation Foundation had been monitoring the turtle eggs in the area.
It said: 'Of the 123 total eggs, eight were unfertilised, two died, and the rest hatched properly. This resulted in an 88% hatching rate for this clutch of eggs. The total incubation time is 65 days.'
The hatchlings are now under the care of the Siam Marine Rehabilitation Foundation and are being prepared for release into their natural habitat.
Hawksbill sea turtles are so named for their unique beak-shaped mouths resembling hawks. They are found throughout tropical oceans, but are designated 'critically endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.
Aside from the destruction of their habitats, they are also hunted for their beautiful shells which are used to make jewellery and trinkets.
