Flash floods engulfed roads and bridges following heavy rain in northern Thailand on Monday.

Mountain runoff flowed into the Chan River, which burst its banks and gushed toward villages in Chiang Rai province on October 9.

Footage shows the deluge surging over a bridge and leaving market stalls inundated in up to 12 inches of flood.

Local authorities from the Patueng Sub-district Administrative Organisation and Mae Chan Municipality dispatched teams to clean up debris clogging drains.

Chiang Rai Governor Puttipong Sirimat said he has ordered officials to help affected residents evacuate to higher ground, and to survey the damage caused by the floods. He said the water was expected to recede today, October 10, if there was no further rainfall.

Meanwhile, Tat Wangmung, chief administrator of the Patueng Sub-district Administrative Organisation, said that the water had also entered residential areas overnight, but had subsided and caused 'minimal damage'.

Tractors have been deployed to clear mud from the roads.

A bridge spanning the Chan River also snapped in half and was swept 33 feet away when the stream overflowed. Authorities said the bridge will be repaired as soon as possible.
