Lion couple's incredible late night duet roaring performance captured with infrared

Living and working in a wilderness area of the Kruger National Park is a big privilege and I get the opportunity to experience nature in its wildest form on a daily basis. It was just after 9pm one evening and I was about to climb into bed when I suddenly heard lions roaring not too far from our camp. Ten minutes later they roared again. I couldn’t resist the urge to go out and try and see if I can find these roaring lions. I gathered all my equipment and set off in a safari vehicle by myself. Finding lions at night is not really that easy as they move around most of the time. All you rely on is your spotlight, good hearing, and a bit of luck. You would drive in the direction where you hear the roaring coming from, switch off, wait, and listen until they give you another clue in which direction to go next. My search continued for over an hour when my patience finally paid off. There they were, a big male lion and a beautiful lioness, lying next to each other not too far from the road. I thought it won’t be long before they roar again. Funny enough, the lion couple had me waiting with them for another half an hour before they suddenly erupted again with their incredible duet roaring performance. I had my infrared camera ready to go and was lucky to capture the two lions in action while roaring. Most of the time you only hear the roar of a lion and seldom you get to see them perform live in front of you. You can hear the roar of a lion up to eight kilometers away. Sitting ten meters away from the two roaring lions was incredible and I could feel the deep sound vibrating through my body. Not too far away from the two lions was the brother of the male lion, answering with his own roaring. The lioness ended her roaring first, with the male stretching his roaring for a little while longer. When all the lions finished their roaring, it became dead quiet again, as if nothing happened. What an incredible experience.
