While on safari in the African bush, you do find those once in a lifetime moments that pops up, managing to leave everyone present absolutely speechless. I was fortunate enough to be part of such a moment during a safari in the Kruger National Park. Our luck was in from the very beginning when we discovered two lions, a big male and his female, busy feeding on the remains of a large kudu bull antelope. It was clear that there was not much meat left and the two lions were still very hungry. It was not long before things got really tense. With minimal meat left, both lions became very frustrated and annoyed with each other, almost like an old couple around dinner table, growling and snarling at each other. The noises were frightening to hear and we could see that neither the male lion nor the female lion was going to give up their share of the last meal. The tense argument about the remaining food continued for another five minutes before the most unexpected thing happened. With all our focus on the lion couple’s tussle, a large elephant bull suddenly appeared from nowhere. We could not believe how this whole situation was suddenly transforming. The elephant bull did not like what he saw and with two loud trumpeting noises, the elephant bull decided that this party was over and chased the lions of their food. We were absolutely stunned by what we witnessed.
