Superstitious locals laid offerings at termite nests that looked like intricate coral reefs in Thailand.

The mounds of earth with branching spires reaching around seven feet tall were found in the basement of a cafeteria at the University of Phayao in Phayao province on December 3.

The dried mud structures have become makeshift shrines as they were believed to be inhabited by sacred spirits. Residents have begun leaving incense, flower garlands and bottles of red Fanta - a sweet drink said to be favoured by the spirits - as offerings.

Meanwhile, university staff said the termites were also living creatures and have decided not to remove the nests until the insects leave on their own.

In Thailand, animist beliefs - ascribing spiritual significance to natural objects like trees and termite mounds - coexist with Buddhism, the country's predominant religion. Practices such as building spirit houses and making offerings are common expressions of reverence for these spirits.
