A family that tried making breakfast on an improvised stove in the middle of the kitchen were scared when it suddenly exploded.

Bizarre CCTV footage shows the family of four from the city of Dali, in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, sitting around the improvised cooker on the afternoon of December 7.

They can be seen preparing tea and eggs wrapped in tinfoil, when one of the eggs explodes and a massive cloud of smoke rises into the air, leaving them petrified.

Seconds after the blast, their two pet dogs slowly approached the four individuals, apparently checking if they were okay.

Local media reported that nobody was injured in the incident. One of the family members, identified only as Ms Li, said that she had egg yolk all over her clothes after the blast, but felt happy that everyone was fine.

In an interview with local media, she said she hopes that the video will raise people's safety awareness.
