In a bizarre tradition, men prepare thorny bushes and later roll on them, in central India's Madhya Pradesh.

The Rajjad community in Sehra village in Betul practices this tradition and this was done on December 18.

Visuals showed these men, who didn't wear anything on their upper bodies, roll on these thorns. The thorny bushes were collected and put together in one place for these men to jump and roll on. Drums were played in the background and a festive atmosphere was created. These men danced a bit and subsequently jumped on these thorny bushes and rolled on them. The thorns stuck to their bodies as these men rolled on them and it was cheered on by the huge group of people who had gathered at the spot. People of all ages lie down on these thorns and roll on them and it was amazing to see that these men braved the pain and performed this age-old ritual.

According to a report, the people of the Rajjad community believe themselves to be descendants of the Pandavas, from the Mahabharata. A story has it that the Pandavas had gone to a jungle to hunt and didn't find water when they were thirsty. Later, they came across a boy-Nahal, from the Bhil community and asked for directions. Nahal offered to give them directions but on the condition that they had to marry their girl to their community. The Pandavas didn't have any sister and adopted a woman, named Bhondai as their sister whom they then married off to Nahal. After the marriage, Nahal offered another condition and asked the Pandavas to roll on these thorny bushes to bid farewell to their newlywed sister.
