Zookeepers prepared cold-proof shelters for animals as the temperature dropped in northeast Thailand.

Staff at the Khon Kaen Zoo took action to protect the wildlife as the mercury plunged to 10 to 15 degrees Celsius in Khon Kaen province on December 20.

Thipawadee Kittikhun, assistant director of the Khon Kaen Zoo, said wooden tents and winter shelters made with straw were installed in the enclosures, while heat lamps and spotlights were also placed to provide warmth at night.

She added the zoo animals were also given vitamins to enhance their strength and boost immunity.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said a strong high-pressure system was prevailing over northern Thailand and causing cold temperatures.

A further drop of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in the north was forecast from December 20 to 25 as another cold front from China was expected to blow in.

Meanwhile, the capital Bangkok and its surrounding towns were predicted to experience temperature drops of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

The TMD said the period is expected to be the coldest so far during the holiday season in Thailand.
