A cafe is using cups made from cookies to reduce plastic waste.

The 48 City Coffee cafe serves its signature 'Cookie Cup with Caffe Latte' drink in cup-shaped cookies in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Customers can sip their favourite brew topped with latte art, then munch on the home-baked cups afterwards - with up to 45 minutes before the hot water dissolves the biscuit.

Despite being new on the menu, the beverage has become one of the most popular items the cafe offers.

Store owner Panyapol Sujarit, 42, said he has been running the cafe for more than two years, using his coffee expertise gained from years of working in a multinational coffee franchise in Thailand.

He said: 'I think my cafe has received good feedback because I am committed to delivering high-quality and delicious coffee, cocoa, and tea at affordable prices.'

He said the 'Cookie Cup' was conceived for an event in December in which the cafe was invited to participate and create innovative food products.

For their entry, Panyapol and his wife created the cookie cup 'to reduce the amount of waste and minimise global warming'.

Panyapol said: 'The cookie cups were made using a recipe developed with the help of my family who are bakers. However, it took a long time to perfect the formula because there are various details to consider to bake the most suitable cookie cups for serving hot coffee.

'I wanted them to both maintain their shape and also taste delicious.'

Because the edible cups were such a hit at the event, selling out in just half a day, Panyapol decided to include it as a special item on his menu.

Today, 48 City Coffee offers just 20 cookie cups per day. Customers can pair it with various hot beverages, including cappuccino, Americano, caramel macchiato, cocoa, tea, or milk, all priced at just 100 baht (3 USD).

Panyapol said: 'Once the coffee is poured, the cookie cup can remain stable for around 45 minutes before it crumbles. It is recommended to eat it while drinking the coffee to get the best and most balanced taste.'
