STORYLINE:

The operation of the Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) in Cambodia has injected impetus into the Southeast Asian country's economy as it helps boost the tourism industry.

With a 3,600-meter-long runway, the 4E-level international airport is currently Cambodia's biggest airport and also the main gateway to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, the country's most popular tourist destination.

Locals doing tourism-related businesses have embraced better incomes and more job opportunities as the new airport helped bring in more foreign tourists since it was launched last November.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Khmer): SAK EMA, Souvenir vendor in Siem Reap
"I can earn about 100 U.S. dollars a day, and during festivals, the revenue is up to 200 dollars a day.
I hope more foreign tourists will come to visit Cambodia because, via the new airport, passengers can fly directly to Siem Reap province.
When there are more tourists, vendors like us are very happy.
I hope more Chinese tourists come to Cambodia to help revitalize our economy."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Khmer): TES VONGSAK, Tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap
"This new airport is beautiful and big, and I think the airport has helped reinvigorate tourism-related businesses because it has attracted more tourists to Cambodia."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Khmer): LANN SOPHAT, Tour guide at the Angkor Archeological Park
"Currently, a lot of tourists from Asia and Europe have come to visit here.
The new airport has provided convenience to foreign tourists to come and visit our country, creating jobs for tour guides and offering job opportunities to local people living around the airport."
