This is the moment an elephant herd stalled passed in front of cars on a Thai highway.

Footage shows the group of elephants and calves sauntering across a road in Kanchanaburi province, Thailand, on January 30.

Motorists stopped to give way as the animals trudged toward the forest on the other side.

Driver Peerapol said: 'There were maybe around 10 to 12 elephants crossing the road. We had to wait for several minutes because they were walking so slowly.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
