This is the moment dozens of protesting farmers ran away choking and barely able to see as police fired tear gas bombs at them to force them to leave.

Tensions between the farmers in India and the police erupted as they headed toward the capital of New Delhi in India on February 13.

Hundreds of protestors had reached the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border during the 'Delhi Chalo' march, on their way to seek minimum support price (MSP) from the government.

Authorities attempted to halt the march by setting up barricades along the highways that lead to the capital.

However, demonstrators did not let the barriers stop them from marching into the city and instead tried to demolish them.

In response, police launched tear gas at the protesters.

Shocking CCTV footage shows thick plumes of white smoke filling the area as hundreds of people ran away.

Some could be heard coughing and struggling to catch their breath while trying to escape the fumes.

In 2020, farmers had camped at Delhi borders protesting against controversial agricultural reforms. The year-long protest - in which dozens died - was called off after the government agreed to repeal the laws.

Now the farmers have started demonstrating again claiming their key demands still have not been fulfilled.

Police in Delhi have sealed the borders on three sides of the city, in an attempt to avoid a repeat of 2020 when protesting farmers hunkered down for months, blocking national highways that connect the capital to its neighbouring states.

Two rounds of talks between farm union leaders and federal ministers have failed to break the deadlock. Farmers are asking for assured floor prices - also known as minimum support price or MSP - which allows them to sell a majority of their produce at government-controlled wholesale markets.

They are also demanding that the government double the income of farmers.
