This is the dramatic moment patients were evacuated outside a hospital as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Indonesia.

Footage shows individuals receiving treatment gathered in the car park and garden in front of the Jusuf SK Regional General Hospital following the tremor on Wednesday afternoon.

Panic also erupted at Pertamina Hospital in Tarakan, where visitors and staff rushed to safety.

Resident Anthon Joy said: 'My wife and I were visiting the fifth floor of Pertamina Tarakan Hospital. Thank God everyone is safe. Our legs were shaking because everything on the fifth floor was shaking so hard, so we ran down the emergency stairs.'

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake struck Tarakan City in North Kalimantan Province at 6:37 pm. The epicentre was located at sea, around 24 kilometres southeast of Tarakan, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Authorities reported minor damage in Kampung Empat and Mamburungan, where several buildings suffered cracks and partial collapses.

Indonesia lies within the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.
