A power bank explosion caused panic on a flight in Thailand this morning.

The AirAsia jet was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen 30 minutes into flight FD3188.

Shocked cabin crew rushed to row 15 of the Airbus A320 and battled to extinguish the fire in around two minutes.

Worried passenger Sayan Srimai who recorded the video said 'the whole plane was in a state of chaos'.

They added: 'We had been sitting for about 30 minutes when suddenly there was a fire burning and smoke rising in the middle of the plane, in row 15.

'Passengers were extremely shocked. The crew were excellent and it only took them two minutes to put out the fire.'

The plane landed on time without any injuries. Technicians boarded the vehicle to check the damage and found black burn marks on the seat.

They told passengers that a power bank had been stored in the seat pouch but it exploded during the flight.

Passenger Sayan said: 'The passenger who owned the power bank was with a large group, about seven or eight people. When it happened he stood up very quickly and he was not hurt.'

Earlier this week, a plane made an emergency landing in Hong Kong when a power bank exploded filling the cabin with smoke.

The budget airline Royal Air Philippines was flying from Boracay island in the Philippines to Shanghai in China when the electronic device exploded mid-air on Monday evening, February 19.

Fire crews and ambulance paramedics were waiting and boarded the plane to make safety checks. There were no injuries.

An AirAsia spokesman said: 'The trained flight attendants brought fire extinguishers to quickly deal with the fire caused by the power bank.'

Airlines only allow power banks to be packed in carry-on luggage, not in checked bags due to the risk of lithium-ion batteries overheating and causing fires in the cargo hold.

There is also a capacity limit of 100 watt-hours (Wh) or 27,000mAh with most airlines.

Airbus CEO Christian Scherer this week visited the AirAsia head office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he was greeted extravagantly by eccentric airline boss Tony Fernandes, who once owner football club QPR in West London from 2011 to 2023.
