STORYLINE:

In Ahouekro village, central Cote d'Ivoire, a grand inauguration ceremony welcomed a female village chief on Monday.

The Akan people living here, known for their matrilineal clan society, prioritize courage, wisdom, and character in chief selection.

SOUNDBITE 1 (French): ATHANASE ATO, Spokesperson for Ahouekro Economic and Social Development Mutual
"I am very happy that this ceremony can bring us together. The induction ceremony of the eighth-generation chief of Ahouekro Village is in line with the government's position on gender issues. This is therefore the ceremony of the eighth chief, Nanan Kouadio Ahou, whose reigning name is Nana Abraham."

SOUNDBITE 2 (French): AMOIN MBRA, Participant
"I am very happy to see a female chief leading an entire village because today we are talking about women's liberation and gender equality. I hope she can manage this village well with her wisdom. I hope she can love everyone. I hope she will not discriminate but accept any group."

SOUNDBITE 3 (French): JULIEN KONON, Ahouekro Village official
"As we can see, the biggest highlight of this induction ceremony is that we elected a female chief. Now at the top levels of government in Cote d'Ivoire, women's contributions in various fields are increasing. Nowadays, many villages have female chiefs, which signifies continuous progress in society, especially in people's mindset."

SOUNDBITE 4 (French): NICOLE MBRA, Organizer of induction ceremony
"This is not a random choice. According to the tradition of the Akan people in Cote d'Ivoire, especially the Baoule clan, we choose the chief regardless of gender. Whether you are male or female, what matters to us is your personal qualities. The primary criteria for selecting a chief are courage, wisdom, and character. With the advancement of technology and globalization, there is an increasing demand for knowledge in managing people."
