Terrified Chinese students flee as furious winds shatter windows in classroom
Terrified students fled as furious winds shattered windows in a classroom at a university in southern China.
The dramatic video was filmed at Jiangxi University of Science and Technology in Nanchang City in Jiangxi Province on April 2.
A classroom was left in shambles as fierce winds broke windows along with their frames, letting rain flood in and toss books from desks. A teacher and several students were forced to take refuge in a corner of the room to escape the havoc.
In the aftermath, a faculty member revealed that the university immediately activated its emergency response system. Following the emergency plan, everyone was moved to safe locations away from windows and other hazardous areas.
Thanks to the effective management, all students were safely escorted back to their dormitories, with no one trapped or injured.
Nanchang issued multiple weather warnings due to extreme conditions, including back-to-back red alerts for strong winds and hail by 5:25 p.m., a first since 2011, following a level four emergency for heavy rain earlier.
On March 31 the city was already battling severe weather conditions with strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall. At 4:00 a.m., a record wind speed of 78.96mph was documented, the second highest ever recorded in the city.
By April 3rd, the Jiangxi Provincial Emergency and Flood Control Headquarters reported that the disastrous weather starting March 31 affected over 93,000 people across nine districts and 54 counties in Jiujiang City and other areas.
The calamity resulted in seven deaths, with 552 people urgently evacuated for safety and 263 others relocated.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
