Total solar eclipse 2024 in Texas, USA
This footage was filmed and produced 8 April 2024.
After passing through Mexico, Texas was the first US state where the total solar eclipse could be seen live. In Kerville, thousands of people waited to witness the moment when the astronomical event reached totality. It was also visible from other cities such as Eagle Pass, Dallas, Austin, Rocksprings, Fredericksburg, Killeen, Waco, Hillsboro, Greenville and Texarkana.
According to NASA, astronomers first have to work out the geometry and mechanics of how the Earth and Moon orbit the Sun under the influence of the gravitational fields of these three bodies. From Newton's laws of motion, they mathematically calculate the motion of these bodies in three-dimensional space, taking into account the fact that these bodies have a finite size and are not perfect spheres. They then input the current positions and velocities of the Earth and the Moon into these complex equations, and then program a computer to "integrate" these equations forward or backward in time to calculate the relative positions of the Moon and the Sun as seen from the Earth's point of view.
This footage illustrates various aspects of the eclipse in Texas.
