This is the nerve-wracking moment a passenger recorded lightning outside a plane's window in southern China.

The female traveller spotted continuous flashes of light within the dark clouds as they flew over Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, on April 27.

Footage shows intense vibrant white light appearing in the clouds.

She said: 'I am relieved that the plane managed to take off, but I felt a lingering sense of unease due to the significant turbulence experienced during the flight.'

According to local reports, there were localized hailstorms and tornadoes in the region, accompanied by widespread moderate to severe thunderstorms and localised heavy rain, along with brief strong winds and intense lightning.

At least 33 people were injured from the tornado that struck the northern suburbs of the city, specifically in the Baiyun District.

The meteorological department of Guangdong Province said that the tornado is at level three (out of a maximum of five), with wind speeds ranging from 218 to 265 kilometres per hour.

The city may continue to experience heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.
