Deadly expressway collapse leaves 19 dead and 30 injured in southern China
On May 1st, around 2:10 AM local time, a highway collapse occurred on the Meida Expressway in Guangdong Province, heading towards Fujian. As of 11:45 AM on the same day, after on-site verification, the accident has resulted in 18 vehicles falling into the collapse (no hazardous or large vehicles such as buses were found), involving a total of 49 individuals. Among them, 19 deaths have been confirmed, while 30 people are undergoing intensive treatment in hospitals and are currently not in life-threatening condition. The collapsed section of the highway spans approximately 17.9 meters in length, covering an area of about 184.3 square meters.
Following the incident, Guangdong Province established an on-site command center for accident rescue. Approximately 500 personnel from various departments, including public security, emergency response, firefighting, health, transportation, and mining rescue teams, have been mobilized for on-site rescue efforts.
Footage captured by eyewitnesses at the scene shows a section of the highway collapsing entirely down the mountainside, with mud sliding down at least several tens of meters away. Only the highway guardrails connected to the pillars are left dangling in mid-air. The collapsed area has formed a large crater, with vehicles engulfed in flames inside. The scene is engulfed in significant flames, and multiple fire trucks and police cars have since arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations.
