A tragic accident unfolded at the Shahapur Tehsil of Thane District on the under-construction Samruddhi Expressway. Late night on August 1 a specialized crane known as a girder launching machine collapsed on a bridge slab, killing 16 workers instantly and injuring three others. The crane fell on two teams of NDRF who had been working on the site.

According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday near Sarlambe village in Shahpur during the construction of the third phase of the expressway. "Five others are believed to be trapped inside the collapsed structure," the police said. Emergency services, including police and fire brigade personnel, are actively engaged in rescue operations.

The 701-kilometre-long Samruddhi Mahamarg, also known as the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, is a vital connection between the two cities. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) oversees the construction, with the first phase inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December last year.
