SOUNDBITE (Chinese): DENG YU, Construction engineer with CHEC (China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd)
"My name is Deng Yu. I am 26 years old. I am a construction engineer. In 2022, I came to Nauru to join the redevelopment project of Aiwo Harbor.
The redevelopment project of Aiwo Harbor, has not only helped improve local infrastructure in Nauru, provided jobs, trained professional and technical personnel, promoted local economic and social development, but also promoted advanced Chinese technology, equipment, construction management.
When I first came here, the new port had not yet been put into use, and Nauru's imports had to rely on secondary transfer by barge.
On September 3, 2022, the new port officially opened, and container ships can dock directly at the port. The method of maritime shuttle service has become a thing of the past in Nauru. I clearly remember, that day many residents of Nauru rushed to the dock and took pictures in excitement.
In February this year, the completion of the auxiliary roads at the port has enhanced both the port's connectivity and its freight handling capabilities, as it optimized the port's road transport system.
During the past two years of overseas engineering construction work, I have sincerely and genuinely respected the local workers. Through continuous communication and interaction with them, I have also brought the Chinese work style and attitude to Nauru. I have experienced the joy and growth brought by cross-cultural integration. Every moment of mutual encouragement and collaboration with them has left a deep imprint in our hearts, allowing me to better integrate into the local community and contribute to the construction projects."
