Two people were injured when a level crossing barrier failed and a train crashed into a pickup truck.

CCTV shows the vehicle loaded with timber slowly moving forward onto the tracks as there were no warning lights or sirens and the red and white pole was raised.

But the system had malfunctioned and the cargo train carrying 24ft long shipping containers smashed into the pickup truck in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, on May 7.

The white Toyota was sent spinning into a blue car parked by the side of the railway line next to a small hut.

With smoke engulfing the area, finally, the warning lights were activated and the barrier was lowered.

Residents helped the injured driver and passenger and reported the crash to the Tha Muang district police station.

The driver had a broken left wrist while the passenger had cuts and bruises on his left leg from the impact of the train.

A Tha Muang Police Station spokesman said: 'We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

'If there is negligence, those responsible will be prosecuted. The injured people may also have their medical bills compensated.'

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels.

The country also has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
