Toxic foam coated the surface of the Thenpennai river and inundated surrounding farmland after a surge of water was released from the Kelavarapalli reservoir in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

Footage from May 13 shows huge piles of the froth piling up on the river's banks and in some places even engulfing coconut trees.

Despite the water surge marking an end to a recent dry period for farmers, the chemical sewage has made its way into adjacent farmland.

Multiple tests conducted on waters from the river have revealed high concentrations of industrial effluents.

The recent surge in water release from the Kelavarapalli reservoir adjacent to Hosur has triggered a concerning phenomenon for local farmers. With 570 cubic feet of water discharged into the Tenpenna River, a towering mass of foam, reaching heights of up to 50 feet, now engulfs the surrounding farmlands akin to a mountainous invasion.

This surge follows intermittent rains in Karnataka and neighboring regions, leading to a significant increase in water flow to the reservoir located in Krishnagiri district. Repairs on the reservoir's sluices have necessitated the direct discharge of water into the river.

Although yesterday witnessed a flow rate of 474 cubic feet per second, today's flow decreased to 205 cubic feet per second, yet the discharge rate remains at a concerning 570 cubic feet per second.

The repercussions are dire for local farmers. Despite the relief brought by flowing river water after months of drought, the presence of chemical sewage mixed with the water has led to the formation of foam, blanketing the riverbanks and adjacent farmlands. Coconut trees, standing just meters away from the dam, are obscured by frothy masses, causing distress among agricultural communities.

The closure of a 2-acre cabbage garden nearby has resulted in substantial financial losses, exacerbating the plight of farmers already grappling with environmental challenges. As concerns mount over the impact of chemical contamination on agricultural yields and livelihoods, authorities face mounting pressure to address the root causes of this ecological crisis.
