STORYLINE:
After graduating with a doctorate from a university in Germany, Sebastian Pios has been looking for inspiration to develop new materials.
Last year, he came to the Zhejiang Lab in China's Hangzhou, and employed artificial intelligence to further improve the research and development efficiency of new materials.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SEBASTIAN PIOS, Postdoctoral fellow at Zhejiang Lab
"I felt like China is really advancing the development of the artificial intelligence and machine learning. When you go from a very very crude model to a more realistic system, and the cost to investigate, the computational time you need to invest does not simply double, but usually increases by a factor of 10 or 100. And AI can help skip that part, whether it is the cost or investment time you have to wait for results, simply slash it down to seconds rather than hours or days or even weeks. So AI can be a very powerful tool helping us accelerate our research."
Pios said that after coming to China, he has gained new inspiration and new progress in his research.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SEBASTIAN PIOS, Postdoctoral fellow at Zhejiang Lab
"One of my research fields focuses on the investigation of water splitting. So generating hydrogen from water, which may be a future source for fuel, for transportation with hydrogen fuel cells, also for chemical reactions."
Reflecting on the past year, Pios said coming to China was the right choice, and that he will actively promote more academic exchange and cooperation between China and Germany.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SEBASTIAN PIOS, Postdoctoral fellow at Zhejiang Lab
"I feel that nowadays the collaboration is already pretty strong given that China is one of the largest trading partners for Germany. And I also think that in the future it will strengthen even further. Given the globalized world and globalized trade, development all over the world, it's a win-win situation for both sides to further increase the exchange of technology, the exchange of knowledge, to further work together."
