Palestine: Death toll in Gaza rises to 36,379
The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 36,379, the health authorities in Gaza said on Saturday.
During the previous 24 hours, Israeli forces killed 95 Palestinians and wounded 350 others, bringing the total number of injuries to 82,407 since the outbreak of this round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday released a statement, saying that the Israeli army continued military operations in many places in Gaza.
According to the Israeli army, in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, they launched targeted and precise military operations and found a large number of weapons, including guns, rockets, and explosive devices. In the central Gaza Strip, over the past week, the Israeli army had carried out operations in parts of Gaza City, killing dozens of armed men in a close combat and finding and destroying an armament depot and several tunnel shafts.
On the same day, the Al-Qassam Brigades, a military wing of Hamas, and the Al-Quds Brigades, a military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement (PIJ), said that in the eastern part of Rafah, their armed forces detonated buried explosive devices and attacked Israeli military squads and vehicles. In the southwestern part of Rafah, they bombarded Israeli troops with mortars and attacked Israeli soldiers. In addition, they also attacked Israeli troops on the Gaza side of Rafah Port and the "Netzarim Corridor" separating the northern and southern parts of the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday declared that a lasting ceasefire in Gaza will not be established until Hamas's military and governing abilities are eliminated and all hostages are freed.
Officials from Egypt, Israel and the United States are about to hold a meeting on Sunday in Cairo to discuss the reopening of the Rafah crossing in Gaza, Egypt's Al-Qahera News TV channel reported.
Egypt reaffirmed its position of not reopening the Rafah crossing as long as its Palestinian side is under Israel's control, said the report, citing a high-ranking security source.
The crossing has been closed since the Israeli army announced the imposition of its control over the Palestinian side on May 7.
Situated between Gaza and Egypt, the Rafah crossing is the main gateway for transporting those injured and patients for treatment abroad and delivering humanitarian and relief assistance into the enclave.
