Bengal train collision - At least 15 killed, 60 injured; human error likely cause of accident

At least five persons died and around 30 others were injured after a goods train collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani station in West Bengal on June 17. Three rear compartments of the express train derailed under the impact of the collision from behind by the locomotive of the goods train, railway officials said. Rescue operations are underway at the spot, about 30 kilometres from North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri station, and the injured persons were being shifted to nearby hospitals. Footage shows rescue and relief work is on Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the railway mishap in West Bengal. The injured would be given ₹50,000. The accident took place around 11 km from New Jalpaiguri station in north Bengal, one of the largest and busiest stations in Northeast Frontier Railway zone in eastern and northeastern India. The train was coming from Agartala and was heading to Sealdah station in Kolkata. The accident took place around 8:30 am. “Rescue operations have started and injured passengers were being shifted to the hospital,” said a railway official posted in NJP
