Turtle has bizarre lump like a mountain on its shell
A turtle has a bizarre lump like a mountain on the top of its shell.
The animal was found in the pond near a resident's mushroom farm and was fondly named Lung Thong or ‘swollen back' in the local language in Pathum Thani province, Thailand.
Footage shows the unusually-looking turtle with a pointy back that resembled the tall body of land on April 26.
The farmer who used to be an engineer and found the turtle, Adun Wichianchai, 37, said he had been mistaking the lumpy back of the turtle as plants and rocks but was baffled when it moved.
Arun said: ‘I had been observing it and while it was eating I curiously lifted its shell and found out it was indeed a part of its body.'
Arun briefly took the animal home but said he had already returned it to the pond.
He said: ‘I have released it back into the pond where it eats vegetables every day.'
The turtle was believed to be a yellow-headed temple turtle that had a metabolic bone disease which caused its shell to appear swollen.
Yellow-headed temple turtles are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List and are also included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
