USA: Officer Involved Shooting During Pursuit in Bakersfield

07/03/2024 01:00 pm (GMT-0800) | BAKERSFIELD, Calif.– Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, a Bakersfield police officer initiated a traffic stop in the area of Truxtun Avenue and Oak Street. The driver failed to yield resulting in a pursuit, according to the Bakersfield PD in a press release.
Officers pursued the vehicle until the suspect stopped at the intersection of Pine and Dracaena streets, exited the vehicle with a "Balearic-style sling" and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
According to the press release: "The suspect was not struck by the officer's gunfire; he entered his vehicle and fled again.
Bakersfield Police officers pursued the vehicle to the area of South Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Boulevard and East Belle Terrace, where the suspect was taken into custody
after a minor use of force.
The suspect was identified as Francisco Monge (45) of Bakersfield. He was arrested for
assault with a deadly weapon, obstructing an officer, and evading an officer. He was
treated at the scene for minor injuries and transported to a local hospital as a
precautionary measure. The officer involved has been placed on routine, paid administrative leave pending the
outcome of the investigation."
