Behind bars-ista! Ex-con opens prison-themed cafe to warn youngsters to behave
A reformed ex-convict opened a prison-themed cafe and minimart to warn youths to follow the law.
Former inmate Chaitawat Chornthong, 32, opened the 'Khok Mhee Minimart', an amusing, jail-themed shop, at the Trang City Center Market in Trang, Thailand.
The store, which means 'Bear Cage' after the local slang for prison, looks like a large jail cell, with metal bars, handcuffs hanging on the grilles, a workshop, a tiny squat toilet, and even a mugshot area where visitors can dress in inmate garb and take selfies.
A cosier outdoor dining area is also available for customers who want a more comfortable experience.
Chaitawat said that before opening the cafe, he had served a 12-year prison sentence, adding he had difficulties finding a job upon freedom because of the stigma attached to being an ex-convict.
He said: 'I aim to change society's perception and I want to highlight that not all ex-convicts are inherently bad, and some commit crime due to a lack of job opportunities.
'As such, I made an effort to employ other ex-convicts here as managers, waiters, and general employees.
'Additionally, I try to educate young people that prisons are not a good place to learn. You should not try to be imprisoned just for the experience.'
The Khok Mhee Minimart is open daily at the Trang City Center Market from 5 pm to midnight.
