China's modernization drive puts people at its center, said Michael Schumann, chairman of the Board of the German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MICHAEL SCHUMANN, Chairman of the Board of the German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade
"From my experience, and I've visited China now for 14 years, I saw China modernizing all along, all the way. So it's a very continuous process. It's a very successful process from what I've seen, not only in the large cities, but also in less developed areas that then became more modern and efficient.
On the one hand, it is the long-term strategic thinking when designing and implementing policies.
And the second one was putting people at the center, trying to take everyone along, so that you even move poorer people and more (low) income people out of poverty and create a better life."

Schumann says as China deepens reform, the global community will benefit from the results.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MICHAEL SCHUMANN, Chairman of the Board of the German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade
"We hope that as we see China's reform policies strengthening the development of the Chinese economy, but also of the Chinese people, that this will be a positive stimulus for the world economy. That it will be a positive stimulus also for less developed countries, for the Global South. And that ultimately, it will benefit the global community. And I think Western countries and Europe, they have to decide whether they want to participate and benefit from their development by putting cooperation over confrontation or whether they want to distance themselves, which in the end will make everyone lose."
