Heroic traffic cop shouts to stop truck about to run over scooter at busy Chinese intersection
A heroic traffic cop shouted to stop a truck about to run over a scooter at a busy intersection in eastern China.
CCTV footage filmed in Tongxiang City in Zhejiang Province on June 24, shows a scooter rider travelling south when a truck prepared to make a right turn at the same intersection.
A police officer, Wei Hongfen, who was on duty, noticed the scooter had entered the truck's blind spot. Acting swiftly, she waved her arms and shouted for the truck to stop while sprinting towards the scene.
The sudden situation left the scooter rider momentarily frozen in place. In the blink of an eye, the scooter was knocked to the ground, with the truck driver unaware of the unfolding danger and continuing to move forward.
As the scooter and rider were about to be pulled under the lorry, a frantic Wei instinctively tried to drag the rider away, all while shouting for the truck to halt.
It wasn’t until then that the driver realised something was wrong and slammed on the brakes, narrowly avoiding a tragedy by just one second.
Passersby rushed to help, lifting both the rider and the scooter. The shaken truck driver admitted, “I was scared to death. I couldn’t see him at all and had no idea I had hit him. If it was not for the shouting, I dread to think what might have happened…”
From the turn to the stop, the terrifying ordeal lasted only five seconds. Thanks to Wei’s quick actions, the scooter rider escaped with only minor injuries.
Wei recounted, “When the truck stopped, his (the scooter rider's) leg was already brushing against the vehicle. One second later, he could have been dragged under…” She added, “I just kept shouting for him to stop and ran as fast as I could. Thank goodness nothing serious happened.”
