Mount Semeru Erupts and Spits Out Incandescent Lava (Fluid Magma), People Are Asked to Stay Away from the Foot of the Mountain

Mount Semeru erupted from Friday 19 July 2024 evening, until finally on Saturday 20 July 2024 at 09.57 West Indonesia Time (Local Time).

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported the height of the volcanic ash column as 4376 m above sea level, when the eruption occurred today, July 20 2024.

Mount Semeru, which is located in Lumajang Regency and Malang Regency, East Java, is still at alert status or level II.

"Mount Semeru on Saturday, July 20 2024, at 09.57 WIB. The height of the eruption column was observed to be approximately 700 meters above the peak, and reached approximately 4376 meters above sea level," said Sigit Rian Alfian, Semeru Volcano Observation Post Officer.

Volcanic ash was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the southwest and west.

It is known that Mount Semeru is a volcanic cone in East Java, Indonesia. Mount Semeru is the highest mountain on the island of Java, with its peak Mahameru, 3,676 meters above sea level.

This mountain was formed due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate.

Please note that the eruption of Mount Semeru in 2021 occurred on December 4 2021, killing at least 51 people, 169 people were injured and 22 people were missing. There were 45 people who suffered burns due to the eruption.
