France: Britain snatches first female Olympic diving medal in 64 years
Paris, France - July 27, 2024
Divers Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen won Britain's first female Olympic diving medal in 64 years with a dramatic bronze in the women's synchronised 3m springboard at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris Saturday.
The British duo earned bronze after China and the United States as they capitalized on a catastrophic error from an Australian pair in the final round to pinch a spot on the podium.
China's divers Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen made a strong start, winning gold in an impressive performance, which sealed a sixth consecutive gold for China in this event. They finished ahead of a U.S. duo who took silver.
For Mew Jensen, the Olympic success was all the sweeter considering an injury almost cost her a place in Paris.

"We are just so pleased. We're really proud of each other, and I think generally, we're just really excited, because this is, it's what you dream about as a child, like you come in, coming into, well, this is my first Olympics, her second Olympics, but our first Olympics together to come away with the medal, we couldn't really ask for much more.";
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Scarlett Mew Jensen, women's synchronized 3m springboard bronze medalist (ending with shot 6):
"I mean, yeah, this is the dream, and to do it obviously, alongside Yaz is just, yeah, more, even more of a dream. Yeah, like, I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. I think.";

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Yasmin Harper, women's synchronized 3m springboard bronze medalist:
"So the Chinese, they are the dominant nation in diving. They are all out, stand out, the best. They always are, and they, they are super difficult to beat. And we, obviously we had Tom and Matti last time around. But today, we're really just focusing on ourselves and giving our best performance that we can together. So going into every dive, we just give each other a little, you know, encouraging word or two before we go, and that really helps us, sets us up to do a good performance.";
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Scarlett Mew Jensen, women's synchronized 3m springboard bronze medalist:
"I mean, I didn't really want to tell her, but I was really terrified. I haven't competed in a really long time. I had a bit of an injury three months ago, so I've sort of been very much getting back into it, and this was, like my first one, after a really long time. So yeah, for it to be an Olympics, I was really, really nervous. But, I think it was very much a muscle memory, and also confidence in her and confidence in myself and us as a team.";
