Fish leap out of water in spectacular display after heavy rains in northern China
On July 26, in Shenyang, Liaoning, heavy rains led to an extraordinary sight as large numbers of fish leapt out of the water, creating a breathtaking scene.
Mr. Wang, who captured the event, said there were so many fish it was impossible to count them, suggesting the phenomenon was due to oxygen depletion in the water. This spectacular display lasted for over half an hour, marking his first encounter with such an event.
Meteorological experts explained that the heavy rains caused a rapid rise in water levels in rivers and lakes, disrupting the natural habitat of the fish. The increased water levels likely destroyed the fish's usual living areas, forcing them to seek new environments. Additionally, the rainwater washed in large amounts of sediment and debris, making the water murky and limiting sunlight penetration. This murkiness impedes photosynthesis in aquatic plants, reducing oxygen levels in the water. Facing a severe oxygen shortage, the fish resorted to jumping out of the water to breathe air directly.
This collective behaviour, known as "Berber leaping," is not an isolated occurrence but a survival strategy employed by fish in response to specific environmental changes. It allows them to cope with the crisis and increase their chances of survival.
