India: Major rescue operations underway by Indian Army amidst landslide in Wayanad
Wayanad, India - July 31, 2024
In a significant development in southern India's Kerala, the Indian Army has intensified its rescue operations following a catastrophic landslide.
The incident took place in Wayanad district on July 31.
Visuals showed army officials rescuing stranded individuals using ropes and other equipment. The scene was intense, filled with the distress and fear of those being rescued, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the bravery of the rescuers.
Public Relations Officer Mahendra Rawat from Narangi Army Cantt of Guwahati stated that the operations are being led by four columns from the DSC Centre, Kannur, and the 122 TA Battalion, working in tandem with the NDRF and State rescue teams. By 06:00 AM, around 1,000 individuals had been rescued, and approximately 70 deceased individuals were recovered.
A team from the MEG and Centre arrived at the site at 19:00 hours to conduct reconnaissance on the Meppadi-Chooralmala Road for potential bridge requirements. Another team led by Brigadier Arjun Seagan from the PARA Regiment Training Centre arrived at 23:00 hours, set up a Control Centre, and assessed a potential bridge site.
Two HADR columns, including medical teams, were airlifted from Trivandrum to Kozhikode and stayed overnight at the airport. They are scheduled to move to their designated location at 06:30 hours to commence rescue operations.
An ETF from MEG and Centre, equipped with one JCB, a TATRA, and a 110-foot T/S Bailey Bridge, reached the location at 03:00 hours. Two additional sets of Bailey Bridges commenced movement by road at 05:00 hours. A C-17 aircraft carrying another Bailey Bridge and three Search and Rescue Dog Teams is set to depart from Delhi Airport at 07:00 hours.
All six columns will continue to execute rescue operations in collaboration with the NDRF and Civil Administration throughout the day. The construction of a bridge on the Meppadi-Chooralmala Road will commence, and an aerial reconnaissance by Brigadier Seagan is planned for 09:30 hours to assess further resource requirements.
