Mudslide kills at least 27 during Cyclone Remal in India
At least 27 people were killed as Cyclone Remal triggered landslides and caused a stone quarry to collapse in India.
Footage shows several graves destroyed after a mudslide hit a cemetery in the outskirts of Aizawl City, between the villages of Melthum and Hlimen, in Mizoram state on May 26.
Officials said at least 13 bodies have been recovered in Melthum and 10 more were buried beneath the rubble, while six corpses have been found at Hlimen.
Search and rescue operations were still ongoing to find trapped survivors.
Anil Shukla, Director-General of Police, said: 'All efforts are underway to rescue the people who are trapped under the debris. However, heavy rains are affecting the operations.'
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, Indian President Droupadi Murmu expressed his condolences, saying: 'Saddened to learn about the loss of lives in a stone quarry collapse near Aizawl in Mizoram. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of rescue and relief operations and wish a speedy recovery of the injured.'
The Mizoram government said the families of the deceased will receive an ex-gratia payment of 400,000 INR (3,770 GBP) from the Mizoram government.
Cyclone Remal made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday night, May 26, leaving a path of massive destruction across the state and the death toll of four persons.
