Shocked passengers looked out of plane windows and saw fuel leaking onto the tarmac.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by Garuda Indonesia was preparing for take-off at the Jakarta Sukarno Hatta International Airport on August 24.

But ground staff noticed the leak and alerted the pilot in charge of the 11-year-old narrowbody plane, with the registration PK-GFW.

The flight crew returned to the gate for the 135 passengers to disembark from flight GA 174 before the plane was grounded. A replacement flight to Pekanbaru-Sumatra Island took off two hours later.

Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is ongoing.

The national carrier expressed its commitment to passenger safety and said the incident would be thoroughly investigated. The airline also apologised to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.
