Villagers catch crocodile and parade it through streets
Villagers caught a crocodile from a farm and paraded it through the streets.
Three neighbours were walking through the paddy fields when they spotted the 8ft reptile in West Bengal, India, on August 26.
They informed the village head, who called the forest department for assistance, but brave residents volunteered to handle it themselves.
Footage shows the men taking turns to carry the animal triumphantly over their shoulders to show to everyone.
Their neighbours followed them, forming a procession after the successful rescue.
Forest department officers arrived in the village at 11:30 pm to retrieve the animal. They evacuated it into a pond and released it unharmed.
Earlier this month a 15ft crocodile was spotted resting on a resident's roof amid heavy flooding in India. Footage showed the massive beast lying on an iron sheet roof as the deluge swept through Gujarat state on August 29.
The region had been battered by heavy rain for several days and authorities said the Vishwamitri River had overflowed its banks and flooded nearby homes, killing at least 28 people and displacing thousands more.
There are two species of crocodiles that are found in India and they are commonly found in lakes, rivers, and saltwater all around the country.
The Mugger crocodiles that live in marshes and freshwater are considered less aggressive towards humans.
The Saltwater crocodile which is more common in Eastern India and is prevalent in coastal areas and mangroves, are known to be more of a threat.
While crocodile conservation is reinforced in many places in India, officials firmly advise locals to refrain from going and bathing in areas where crocodiles are found more frequently.
