US: New Vent Opens, Lava Falls Grace Nāpau Crater in Ongoing Eruption
United States - September 18, 2024
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park - The dynamic landscape of Kīlauea's middle East Rift Zone continues to evolve with the emergence of a new fissure vent on September 18, 2024, at approximately 3:15 PM HST. This latest vent, located just west of Nāpau Crater, marks the fourth system to open in this current phase of volcanic activity, captivating both scientists and onlookers with its fiery spectacle.
From this new vent, rivers of molten lava have begun their descent, cascading over the western cliffs of Nāpau Crater. These lava falls, emanating from a channel over 50 meters wide, paint a dramatic picture against the backdrop of the crater's rugged terrain. Since Sunday night, the eruption has progressively blanketed about two-thirds of Nāpau Crater's floor, covering an area equivalent to nearly 125 acres or 95 football fields with fresh lava.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports the lava is flowing at an estimated rate of 5-15 cubic meters per second, with impressive fountaining noted in video footage from the S2cam and during aerial observations. This eruption, while awe-inspiring, remains confined to a remote and inaccessible part of the National Park, ensuring there are no immediate threats to nearby communities or infrastructure.
HVO scientists, leveraging both aerial and ground-based technologies, are diligently monitoring the situation. Their assessments aim to understand not only the current state of the eruption but also to predict potential hazards. The work is conducted in collaboration with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, which grants access to this otherwise restricted zone.
The ongoing eruption of Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, serves as a reminder of the earth's ever-changing nature and the continuous geological drama that unfolds in Hawai'i. While the spectacle draws fascination from around the globe, the focus of local authorities remains on safety, scientific study, and preserving the natural integrity of this unique landscape.
