Flash floods gushed through a village and damaged homes in Thailand - just days after the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi.

Footage shows the muddy deluge flowing in the street between houses in Chiang Rai province on September 23.

Thousands of families were affected by widespread flooding due to continuous heavy rains.

Roads were blocked and drivers were stranded.

District chief Pongsak Petkongkaew said they informed villages to evacuate to higher ground where evacuation centres were set up.

The Thai Meteorological Department forecasted that day that Northern Thailand, including Chiang Rai province would experience heavy downpours with potential flash floods and landslides due to a strong monsoon trough that sweeps the region.

The southwest monsoon, which covers the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, is also intensified by a low-pressure system hovering over neighbouring Hainan, China.

It comes just days after Typhoon Yagi killed 10 in Thailand. Hundreds more lost their lives in neighbouring Myanmar and Vietnam while hundreds of thousands were displaced across Southeast Asia and China.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
