Switzerland: Stud Earns His Stripes In Breeding Programme
[Note: undated footage]
This is the what-the-buck moment a zebra stud earns his stripes as he mounts three different females on his first day at a new zoo enclosure in Switzerland.
The male Grevy's zebra, named Rashidi by keepers at Zurich Zoo, had been transferred from a wildlife park in Portugal to take part in a breeding programme.
The breed is aggressively territorial and to spare him a rough reception keepers had kept him in tightly controlled conditions for three months.
But when they introduced him to his new outdoor savannah-style home the randy stallion made a beeline for the enclosure's four females.
Zoo video footage from the enclosure shows how at first they did not give him a smooth reception.
Rashidi is seen having to buck and kick his way out when they apparently gang up on him trying to drive him off.
He is also seen getting to grips with other African wildlife sharing the enclosure like giraffes and massive white rhinos.
In the wild, Grevy's zebra stallions are loners and fiercely defend their own territories from rivals.
Females live in herds with their young foals and only meet up with males to breed.
Grevy's zebras are originally from Kenya and Ethiopia, but their populations are the most threatened of all zebra species because of the loss of habitat.
With less than 3,000 left in the wild, they are listed as severely threatened on the Red List of Endangered Species.
The video shows the new zebra stallion at the Zurich Zoo, in Switzerland, in September.
