The evening sky turned an eerie shade of deep red in eastern Thailand.

Stunned villagers witnessed the bizarre cloud phenomenon during the sunset at the Bangsaen Beach, in Chonburi, on September 27.

Footage shows the sky illuminated with a vibrant red colour along with a thick, dark bed of clouds, adding to the strange scenic view.

The filmer said: 'It was our first time seeing the sky turn red. It was creepy.'

The reason why sunsets can turn the sky red is that the longer wavelengths of yellow and red light become more visible when sunlight moves farther away, causing the shorter wavelength of blue light to disappear.

In English folklore, a red sky at night is said to be a 'shepherd's delight' whereas a red sky in the morning is a 'shepherd's warning'.

Meteorologists have found that if the sky is red during sunset, it suggests that the weather will likely be good the next day.

In many regions, this happens when the sun sets in the west, illuminating clouds from behind, indicating that the weather system has passed and high pressure, which is usually associated with calm and dry weather, is moving in. This was important for shepherds who relied on good weather to tend their flocks.

Conversely, if the sky is red in the morning, it suggests bad weather may be on the way. A red sunrise can indicate that moisture-laden air is moving in from the west, bringing clouds and potentially storms.
