SOUNDBITE (Spanish): DIEGO MARCOS, Director of Civil Association for Argentina-China Cooperation
"China's opening-up process is a very interesting one. I was first interested in its focus and the pragmatic approach the Chinese government used to target the reform geographically.
In the early 1980s, China began to establish special economic development zones where the institutional reform was being executed.
The Chinese government realized that more economic freedom yielded more well-being for its citizens and that more material well-being allowed people to pursue their own happiness.
As a result, the Chinese government began to expand that reform to the inner regions of China. It is a policy that was called 'go west.' For me, the pragmatism in Chinese politics has always been very impressive. That is one thing.
The second thing that always caught my attention is how the Chinese people embrace and are willing to change, to progress. They are not afraid of what is new. I have seen a technological transformation in the last decades. I have seen people go from giving me back a cent, which is a very small coin, to nowadays that I no longer need to carry cash while traveling in China. During my last trip to China, I did not see a bill. I no longer see yuan in cash.
It's very impressive about how they adapt quickly to technology. That's very impressive."
