SOUNDBITE (English): B. R. DEEPAK, Professor of Center for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India
"Ever since its inception, the BRICS has played an extremely important role in advancing multilateralism.
This fair and equitable or just international order which BRICS envisages to create or build is mirrored or reflected in the (China-proposed) initiatives. Given the economic heft of China and the kind of global public goods it has initiated, I think they have found appeal in the Global South, be it the Global Development Initiative, and also the other initiatives like GSI, Global Security Initiative.
Therefore, China's contribution to steering the BRICS towards success has been very, very important, and also quite appealing because of the economic heft and the fact that it is one of the largest trading partners of all the BRICS countries."

Deepak added that through its development and cooperation under the BRICS framework, China has provided tremendous support for many countries in the Global South, helping to alleviate poverty, especially in Africa and South Asia.
