Baku, Azerbaijan - November 11, 2024 China's special envoy for climate change has called for enhanced multilateral cooperation on climate change on the sidelines of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or COP29, which kicked off in Azerbaijan's capital city of Baku on Monday. This year's climate conference is aimed at seeking a new climate change funding goal to replace the existing collective target of mobilizing and providing 100 billion U.S. dollars annually by developed countries in support of developing countries. The conference, scheduled for Nov. 11-22, will also focus on such topics as global carbon trading markets, as well as global energy transition from fossil fuels. Leading the Chinese delegation to COP29, Liu Zhenmin, appointed as China's special envoy for climate change in January 2024, said he expected that consensus can be reached on a series of key topics during the conference. He pointed it out that it is essential for countries across the world to demonstrate their determination in supporting multilateralism and multilateral cooperation on climate change against the backdrop of a complex and volatile world. COP, or Conference of the Parties, refers to a series of formal meetings where governments assess global efforts to advance the Paris Agreement and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Liu Zhenmin, China's Special Envoy for Climate Change: "Given the significant shifts in the current international landscape, there is widespread concern about the support for multilateral cooperation on climate change by developed countries following the U.S. elections and the elections in EU member states and the European Parliament. The pressure of a global economic downturn remains substantial, yet cooperation among nations is imperative and indispensable. Therefore, we hope that countries can demonstrate their firm commitment to supporting multilateralism and multilateral cooperation on climate change through COP29."; FILE: Beijing, China - Date Unknown 8.
