STORYLINE:
In today's world, the development gap between the North and South remains significant.

China, as the world's largest developing country and a natural member of the Global South, is promoting the common prosperity of Global South countries through concrete cooperation schemes and actions.

Sahiwal coal-fired power plant is a flagship project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in eastern Pakistan.

It's one of the most efficient coal-fired power plants in Pakistan with advanced technology and best environmental protection indicators.

The plant has established the Huaneng Pakistan Vocational and Technical College, helping the younger generation to improve employment skills and broaden career paths.

Before joining the power station, Muhammad Ramzan had to make do with a meager salary at a petrol station.

After studying in China via an opportunity provided by the vocational and training college, Ramzan landed a job at a fuel handling department of the power plant, and his life took a positive turn.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Urdu): MUHAMMAD RAMZAN, Vice operator, Sahiwal coal-fired power plant
"I started out as an inspector. Through continuous learning and with the help of Chinese colleagues, my professional skills have been greatly improved. Now I am a fuel specialist. The salary has also increased a lot with my promotion."

Since its inception in 2019, the college has trained more than 6,000 individuals.

Now, Pakistani employees account for around 80 percent of the staff at the power plant.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SAJJID BASHIR, Senior executive of fire safety, Sahiwal coal-fired power plant
"It is really very helpful for them for two things. One, it gives them the opportunity of job, and second, it gives them the skill."
The CPEC, one of the flagship projects under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is a corridor highlighting energy, transport, and industrial cooperation.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SOHAIL AHMAD, Associate professor of international relations at COMSATS University Islamabad
"I think that the Chinese modernization process can be a model for the developing countries. When it interacts with other peoples, it doesn't only think about its own development or its own benefit, it creates a win-win situation for other peoples as well."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): HUMA BAQAI, Pakistani international relations scholar
"China is willing to collaborate, engage, cooperate, mediate for progress, growth, development. And it is attracting a lot of people, a lot of countries in the South."

China-Africa cooperation is seen as a model for South-South cooperation.

China is advancing projects such as the China-Africa Juncao technology cooperation, aiming to boost local agricultural production and increase farmers' incomes through Chinese expertise.

From 2008 to 2016, Emmanuel Ahimana learned Juncao technology from Chinese experts to grow mushrooms using low-cost materials.

SOUNDBITE 5 (Kinyarwanda): EMMANUEL AHIMANA, Founder of Biovita mushroom production company
"Before getting involved with the Juncao technology, I earned just 400 Rwandan francs daily. Now, I produce over 10,000 mushroom tubes each month. With all of that, I now earn around 800,000 Rwandan francs (a month)."

Juncao technology was invented by Chinese professor Lin Zhanxi in the 1980s and has been shared with over 100 countries, including Rwanda.

SOUNDBITE 6 (Chinese): LIN ZHANXI, Chief scientist of the China National Engineering Research Center for Juncao Technology
"The development of Juncao has opened up a new path for Rwanda's agriculture that is efficient, effective, cost-effective, high-yielding, of high quality, and ecologically safe. It also provides Chinese wisdom and solutions for solving their development problems."

Ahimana is one of more than 4,000 Rwandan farmers involved in mushroom cultivation. The entire industry chain has created jobs for over 30,000 people.

SOUNDBITE 7 (Kinyarwanda): EMMANUEL AHIMANA, Founder of Biovita mushroom production company
"Talking with the Chinese experts wasn't just about learning how to grow mushrooms, it was about understanding how to succeed in life."

SOUNDBITE 8 (English): AMSON SIBANDA, Chief of the National Strategies and Capacity Building Branch Division for Sustainable Development Goals at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)
"Juncao technology has contributions to job creation and it does contribute to environmental protection issues."

Over the past decade, China has established 24 agricultural technology demonstration centers in Africa and introduced more than 300 advanced agricultural technologies, increasing local crop yields by an average of 30 to 60 percent and benefiting over 1 million farmers across the continent.

Since 2015, Chinese researcher Li Xinwei has been working with his Honduran colleagues on a joint archaeological team.

They excavated the ruins of an aristocratic courtyard in the ancient city of Copan, one of the most important cities of the Mayan civilization, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Here, the team has discovered many finely crafted pottery pieces, jade, and sculptures.

Methods such as drone aerial photography and 3D imaging technology brought by Chinese archaeologists have greatly promoted the research.

SOUNDBITE 9 (Spanish): SALVADOR VARELA MARTINEZ, Western region representative of the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History
"The implementation of technology in research that China has is going to contribute a lot to that in Honduras."

SOUNDBITE 10 (Chinese): LI XINWEI, Vice director of the Institute of Ancient History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
"The archaeological collaboration between China and Honduras allows us to truly discover the beauty of another civilization. As we work together to conduct such cross-regional civilization research, I believe this can strengthen cultural confidence among countries in the Global South."

China has all along been the staunch force for the development and prosperity of the Global South.

China has provided development assistance to more than 160 countries, joined hands with more than 150 countries in building the Belt and Road.

It has worked with over 100 countries and international organizations to advance the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and set up a Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, which has supported more than 150 projects.
