Crested Terns (Thalasseus bergii) commonly seen right around the Australian coastline. They breed on offshore islands – one of their main breeding areas near Perth is on Penguin Island, located just off the coast of Safety Bay, south of the city. Nesting on Penguin Island occurs mainly in the austral Spring (October and November) with breeding colonies located on dense mats of dune vegetation that is also used by breeding Bridled Terns (Onychoprion anaethetus) and Silver Gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae). The attractive Crested Tern chicks are mostly fed small fish by their parents. This Tern chick begged an adult for food, was refused, and then began playing with a piece of grass while continuing to beg.
