A man has been arrested on suspicion of brutally attacking a taxi driver in his 80s after footage of the incident went viral.

The elderly cabbie was repeatedly punched by a passenger along a busy high street in a Birmingham suburb on November 23.

Police said the victim suffered "nasty facial injuries" after being attacked at around 4.15pm in the Kings Heath area of the city."

A graphic image posted on social media shows the victim with cuts to his eyebrow, nose and lip as well as a badly bruised eye and bloodstains on his collar.

West Midlands Police said a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday (Sun) and has since been bailed.

A force spokesperson said: "We've arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting a taxi driver on Kings Heath High Street."

"We've been investigating after a man in his 80s sustained nasty facial injuries at around 4.15pm on 23 November."

"Following enquiries we detained a 37-year-old man on suspicion of assault yesterday (Sunday). "

"He has been released on police bail with strict conditions as enquiries continue."

"The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact us via Live Chat, or by calling 101, and quote 20/978519/24."

The force had said previously: "This was a totally unacceptable attack and we're carrying out active enquiries to identify who was involved."

Video footage - obtained by the Birmz Is Grime blog - shows the taxi driver with a bloodied face in the aftermath of the attack.

Two men can be seen surrounding his cab with the OAP even opening the boot for them so they can remove their bags.

The person filming from inside a car behind can be heard saying: "That geezer has just battered this taxi driver. He's split his eye, Oh look at this face."

An online fundraiser set up by other local taxi drivers for the victim has so far raised £2,000.

Organiser Carl Wilson said he wanted to give the victim "some time off with his family to recover, without worrying about loss of earnings, after being violently attacked just trying to earn a living"
