Scientists said they have discovered hidden biodiversity along Chile's unexplored coastline.

Officials revealed the stunning variety of life after mapping four unknown underwater canyons. They said they found nearly 20 methane seep ecosystems and documented an incredible range of marine species, possibly including 60 new ones.

A team from the Schmidt Ocean Institute spent 55 days aboard the R/V Falkor, traveling from Valparaiso to Punta Arenas. Using advanced remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), they captured live footage of the seafloor.

They also mapped sonar and methane concentrations to explore both shallow and deep seeps, uncovering thriving communities in areas never explored before.

Researchers claimed that one of the most exciting discoveries was a red cusk-eel, Genypterus chilensis, near a large tubeworm mound. The fish is important to Chile's fishing industry and has been celebrated in the country's culture, even appearing in Pablo Neruda's poetry.

Its behaviour near methane seeps raises questions about its dependence on these unique ecosystems.

The team also explored huge submarine canyons, including one that covers 2,000 square kilometres and is more than 3,000 metres deep.

The canyons are home to species that build habitats, such as deep-sea corals and glass sponges, and support creatures like octopuses and Humboldt squid.

Other finds included glowing anglerfish, shimmering polychaete worms, and clam beds sustained by chemosynthesis.

Dr Patricia Esquete, co-leader of the mission, said: 'These exploratory expeditions are essential to understanding our planet. We suspect at least 60 species are new to science and will spend years confirming this.

'These discoveries highlight the need to protect these fragile, hidden environments.'

Dr. Jyotika Virmani, Schmidt Ocean Institute's executive director, added: 'What is out of sight should perhaps not be out of mind.'
