A plane that went missing with 10 people onboard was found in a remote forest in Colombia.

The Cessna 402 aircraft registered HK 2522 was flying between the towns of Urrao and Betulia when it lost contact with air traffic control on January 8 evening.

The flight was carrying eight passengers and two crew onboard. Airline Pacific, which operated the plane, said it had taken off from Jurado town and was due to land at 6pm in Medellin City - the former home of Narco king Pablo Escobar.

Pacifica manager Ruben Dario Lesmes Bustamante said: 'Right now, what we are doing is adhering to due process, advancing the search and rescue plan and aircraft orientation, because the only thing we know is that communication was lost and there has been no communication so far.'

Search teams combed the area and found what appeared to be the remains of the missing Cessna in a forest in Urrao town in the Antioquia Department on January 9.

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement on Thursday: 'A helicopter participating in the search efforts sighted what, according to preliminary evidence, appears to correspond to the Cessna 402 aircraft, registration HK2522. The discovery occurred in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Urrao, Antioquia.

'Rescue teams from the Aerocivil SAR, the Accident Investigation Directorate, the Colombian Aerospace Force, the Government of Antioquia, Civil Defense, among other entities, are working intensively to access the exact site of the accident, located in a difficult-to-access area.'

Authorities said the search efforts were ongoing.
